I know ombre is soooo last season but I am mildly obsessed with it. Prada did it for Fall 07 which means that now it is trickling down to (aka being ripped off by) department store merchants and more affordable shoe designers. I was kind of over it before it was even in, but for some reason (learning to see more of the shadows in things?) I am really drawn to it now. I am particularly enamored of patent degrade or ombre accessories. Charles David is totally doing a rip of the Prada handbags:
I tend to prefer footwear, as you all know, and will be on the lookout for something that isn't cheap looking or lame. Whenever trends trickle down, they tend to get a little déclassé.
And while we're on the subject of French, and obsession, maybe it's just the movies I've been seeing lately but it struck me the other day as I was listening to the Deftones' version of No Ordinary Love just how subversively psychotic that song is, and I love it. The original is great and all, but Sade is my go-to for mellow, and I really like that the Deftones make the song into this painful ballad sung by someone who might well be a total stalker.
I made the mistake of re-watching Wicker Park, the American remake of L'Appartement, and wow was it underwhelming. There is just no comparison once you've seen the original. But another song that popped out at me (besides Aqualung's Strange and Beautiful, which is both of those things) was Coldplay's The Scientist. I guess I'd never really listened to it before. It was on the radio so much that I tuned it out, but seeing it in those final (and inevitable, thanks Hollywood! <rolls eyes>) minutes of the film made it hit home. It also has to do with the place I'm at emotionally, of course, in that these are the things appealing to me right now, but while I normally think that Chris Martin is a very limited lyricist there's something about the words to The Scientist that just really hit home at the moment. To quote Ani Difranco, "Every pop song on the radio/ is suddenly speaking to me..." She's talking about love, and I'm talking about loss, but sometimes it's the same thing.
Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry
You don't know how lovely you are
I had to find you
Tell you I need you
Tell you I've set you apart
Tell me your secrets
And ask me your questions
Oh, let's go back to the start
Running in circles
Coming up tails
Heads on a science apart
Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh take me back to the start
I was just guessing
At numbers and figures
Pulling your puzzles apart
Questions of science
Science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart
Tell me you love me
Come back and haunt me
Oh and I rush to the start
Running in circles
Chasing our tails
Coming back as we are
Nobody said it was easy
Oh, it's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be so hard
I’m going back to the start...
