In the world of budget fashionistas, there is one thing that gets us all more excited than Christmas and birthdays and presents put together, and it is designer capsule collections for retailers we can actually afford. I've been hearing rumors about Alexander McQueen doing a collection for Target and the anticipation could just about kill me. I want to know! And I want to see! Some designers do better than others at this kind of thing. Not everyone knows themselves well enough to distill their vision of their clothing into a few pieces that can actually be made and mass-manufactured for the common people (i.e. those of us not born with trust funds).
So you can imagine my excitement at finding out that Comme des Garçons is going to be doing a collection for H&M this fall. It looks pretty freakin' gorgeous, and I am soooo excited to see the rest of it and figure out what can actually work for me. Victorian coatdresses? Yes, please!
I actually really enjoyed the goth rocker vibe of the Fall 08 RTW pieces, though I admit that the percentage of people in this world who could actually wear the clothing is probably about less than 1%, if that. As an example, I give you what is probably the most wearable outfit in the entire collection:
But Rei Kawakubo is a genius of deconstruction, and I love that she's taking her avant garde, architectural clothing and interpreting it in a more accessible way so that we normal peeps can wear it. Here are a couple of other images from that show:As you can see, she specializes in deconstructed menswear elements with an added frill of femininity here or there (a lot of the clothes have heart-shaped holes in them). If you want to see some real wackiness, just go to Style.com and check out the entire collection.
I can see aspects of the Fall 08 collection in the one picture from the H&M collection that I've seen--the ruffles and dark colors--but otherwise, it's (so far) as different as can be while still maintaining the overall sensibility of Kawakubo's design:
